She spilled coffee on a customer;    She saw over his shoulder

in the paper, about the content        of plutonium waste in the air.

The plant spokesman says, “no danger, for the present.”

                   Am                         Em  +C+D+C B  Am                                  Em +C +D +C  B  Am

One of the regulars takes her free hand;            he says “I hear you’re a dancer.

                   Am                  Em  +C+D+C B F#                                                   B

I’ll have a donut with my coffee -              hey, don’t you know I don’t take cream.”

It takes so much daily courage to keep going on.

Em                     +G/E                 +G/E    +C  +D  +C   B        +C B

She goes upstairs; class has started. the dance teacher looks at her blankly.

          Am  +G/E                       +G/E    Em  +C           +D    +C   B        +C B

It’s a good workout; she’s lost her turnout, still those old aches feel good again.

                 B                                A                      Em   +C           +D    +C   B        +C B

But her thoughts dance so much lighter than her body.

                   Am                         Em  +C+D+C B  Am                                  Em +C +D +C  B  Am

She has a short drink with her lover where the sign says, “Wanted; Dancers.”

                   Am                  Em  +C+D+C B F#                                                   B

Bums a cigarette - “Weren’t you quitting?” “I need one now and then.”

              B                     A         A7          Em +C+D+C B

Maybe simple daily courage will keep us ready.

He puts his magazine down by the bedside. She’s at the sink, washing nylons.

                   Am                  Em  +C+D+C B F#                                                   B

He says, “They’re crazy, with these n-bombs -how long can it go on?”

Em                     +G/E                 +G/E    +C  +D  +C   B        +C B

He says “I love you, and I know you give me all the love I can handle.

Em                     +G/E                 +G/E    +C  +D  +C   B        +C B

To be with you, to be in you is all the joy I can hold,

              B                     A         A7          Em +C+D+C B

and you give me daily courage, keep me going on.”
